DBXXL WEEKLY MUSIC PRODUCTION TIP
If you are a music producer the only way you can produce a tangible product to be presented to major labels/major indies for consideration to the masses is to work with aspiring artists who have that x-factor that you can see at a raw stage or higher. Since A&R departments at record labels are no longer talent scouting in the same levels as of old, they are looking to music producers to do so. Now I do understand when you are doing this style of networking you may or may not find the one who you can take to the next level but the more you exercise talent scouting the better your eye and ear gets to finding the proper product to present and promote to major labels. Obviously, there are other ways to talent scout but getting out to live performances regularly is the best barometer to determine talent in my assessment. So open your ears and eyes to the world of talent scouting offline.

Yesterday, I attended the “Battle Of The Bands” finals at the Baltimore Soundstage getting my talent scouting thizzle on. Now I could have relaxed at home watching the Giants put a hurting on the Packers or go to my friend’s BDAY party but if you are truly dedicated to the music game you have to attend where opportunity avails itself. The venue was crowded almost to capacity and excitement and intensity was in the air. What I found was that there was two levels of talent performing last night: the beginner level and the raw level. The raw level is where you can polish that diamond into a rough. There are many other factors that ultimately should make you decide to actually connect with these raw artists for future work such as: demeanor, motivation, determination, work ethic, etc. but believe it or not the main factor is more simple than that.
So let’s go back to the performances. I’m sure you are thinking, how did I see & know the two different levels of talent? I watched the crowd more than watching the stage. Let me repeat, watched the crowd and their reactions more than the stage. Why? Because you are able to see the power of a band connecting with their fans to set them on fire and inspire. At the end of the day, a group is only as good as the response that it elicits. There are many talented folks out here who fail on a regular basis to set the crowd on fire. Some folks will say one person has the x-factor and some will say they don’t but many times it is just slight adjustments in stage presence, song selection, knowing when to end a set, encouraging the crowd to participate, etc. will open up a world to an aspiring artist notwithstanding motivating folks to attend your shows.
So the simplest factor is seeing how the crowd reacts to the artists.
Last night I watched as the artists named Grant, Golden Guns, and Jared Mullens set the crowd on fire with their powerful sets. All three act are as different as each person in the world. Grant is a hip hop artist along the lines of Drake meets B.O.B.. Golden Guns are rock trio along the lines of Living Colour meets Rage Against the Machine. Jared Mullens is a country pop artists along the lines of New Era Garth Brooks. Although they all did completely different material they were all able to find a way to connect with their audience and set their spirits on fire.

Did these 3 groups have their core audience there? You bet but all of them were able to acquire new fans just by the way they connected with the crowd. Now will I work with any of these artists? Time will reveal but I know one thing if I do have an opportunity to develop their raw talent I won’t be starting in the beginning stages which means that they could possibly be the next big thing in a short amount of time. As a Music Producer one of my goals is to produce the next big thing. This can only be attained by acquiring quality acts. So this tip is to Music Producers who are making a living doing this & to those who are not currently making a living making music: Get out there get your talent scout on regularly and watch as your productivity rise, as well as, your popularity.
