As an Indie Music Producer, Songwriter, & a long list of other music titles I have found in my experience many things can block your ability to succeed. So I will drop a tip weekly in terms of music.
WEEKLY MUSIC PRODUCTION TIP:
Folks are always talking about a hot track, a hit, pro this or that? But what does all that mean?In many cases, it means they want the recording to reflect the quality on the current radio. Writing and creation are subjective but one thing that can bring you closer to the sound of the radio is your EARS. That is perhaps one of the most important pieces of equipment any music producer will have to guide their artists.Don’t get me wrong high level hardware and high end plugins help but without a trained and discriminate producers ear you basically have nada. Any aspiring artist who can not differentiate between a trained producer and an inexperienced non-trained producer is just not that serious about their career.
In today’s music landscape everyone with a macbook or a pc will call themselves a music producer when in fact many are hobbyist. So if you are a serious aspiring artist and producer know the difference is your ears.
Personal confession: I just finished a mixing gig with a difficult client. He was so use to poor quality mixes and distortion that when I mixed it closer to what radio standards are(which he asked for btw), he thought I changed the music. Long story short he was so use to inexperienced producers & mixing engineers that he had trained his ears to consider poorly recorded and mixed music as good and in tune, organized, and not overly eq’d, compressed or overly produced music to be bad. His lack of resources, lack of understanding of music production and mixing, and his not being clear on what he ultimately desired will be a direct link to why he may be held back as an artist. With or without resources one must know that your ear is the difference.
Follow up: Though he was difficult he went with my mixes and got great reviews. #dbxxl1 reinvention! #dmv
